Graduate students who come to Rice look for a variety of qualities in a school, but one thing seems to be important to them all—the sense of community and camaraderie among students and faculty.
The student/faculty ratio at the George R. Brown School of Engineering is about five to one, which means classes are small, and it is easy to get to know faculty and other graduate students. Many prospective students are drawn to the close-knit feeling of the Computer Science Department when they visit Rice; they sense an atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration rather than competition.
Faculty members are accessible and many have an open-door policy that allows students to drop in for help or advice when they need it.
