CS Students Receive Prestigious FellowshipsDrew Bryant has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. These awards, offered to approximately 1,100 graduate students, provide three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees. It is intended for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. Allison Heath and Emily Fortuna were chosen as recipients of the Google 2008 Anita Borg Scholarship. The Anita Borg Scholarship is awarded to female undergraduate entering their senior year or to graduate students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 4.5 on a 5.0 scale majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other technical fields. Recipients were invited to attend Google headquarters in Mountain View, California on April 3–5, 2008, for a networking retreat that included a series of workshops. Allison is a fourth year PhD student in the Physical and Biological Computing group. She received her BS in Computer Science from Rice in 2004. Her research interests lie in bioinformatics, structural computational biology. Emily is currently a junior CS student and will be a senior next year. She in interested in Artificial Intelligence research and Natural Language Processing, focusing on the combination of human psychology with computers, to help develop tools to better interact with people. She is also interested in audio and speech processing work, and is currently working on a music processing research project with Dr. Devika Subramanian. Jeff Kilpatrick was awarded a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF). The fellowship is awarded to students in their first or second year of graduate study in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences, or exceptional senior undergraduates. |
