The Rice Board of Trustees has approved a promotion for Dr. David B. Johnson from Associate Professor to Professor, effective July 1, 2008.

Dr. Johnson joined the faculty at Rice in 2000. He completed his undergraduate studies (double major in Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences, 1982), as well as both his MS and PhD (1985 and 1990, respectively) at Rice. From 1989 to 1992, Dr. Johnson worked as a Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Department until he joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, where served on the faculty for eight years.

Dr. Johnson’s research interests lie in protocols for wireless and mobile networking. He currently heads the Monarch research group (Mobile Networking Architectures), which he founded in 1992 at Carnegie Mellon (the Monarch Project). He is Chair of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Mobility of Systems, Users, Data, and Computing (ACM SIGMOBILE), and he is active in the Mobile IP and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Working Groups of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the principal body that develops the protocol standards for the Internet. He was one of the main designers of the IETF Mobile IP protocol for IPv4 and is the primary designer of Mobile IP for IPv6, and his group’s Dynamic Source Routing protocol for ad hoc networks (DSR) has been published by the IETF as an experimental protocol for the Internet.

Dr. Johnson has been a member of the Technical Program Committee for over 40 international conferences and workshops and he has served as editor for six different journals. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 1995 and the ACM SIGMOBILE Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
