Troy Ruths Awarded DOE Fellowship and Graduate Research FellowshipComputer Science graduate student Troy Ruths has been awarded a 2009 Department of Energy Computational Science Fellowship (DOE CSGF). Ruths began working on his Ph.D. at Rice last August when he joined Professor Luay Nakhleh’s Bioinformatics Research Group. His research interests focus on evolutionary analysis of biological interaction networks. He completed his undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The DOE CSGP fellowship provides substantial support, which includes full tuition and required fees during the appointment period, a yearly stiped, an academic allowance to cover the cost of conferences directly related to the student’s research, as well as funds to provide the student with adequate computer support. The DOE CSGF is a highly sought after fellowship, and has a fund rate of about five percent. It is jointly funded by the DOE’s Office of Advance Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and the National Nuclear Security Administrations’s Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program. The fellowship requires that the student complete a practicum at a participating DOE research laboratory for at least one twelve-week period. Fellows also attend an annual meeting, held in Washington, DC, for 3 days. Ruths also received an award from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP).The award provides three years of support to graduate students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. |
