Life after the CS degree: an interview with graduating students

A few graduating computer science students, undergraduate and graduate, recently shared their future plans for after the robes are returned and commencement festivities draw to a close.  Find out just what a few students plan to do with their CS degrees, and what they will miss most about life at Rice... 

What are your plans after graduation?

"I'm doing CS research at Rice this summer before heading to Google in Mountain View, CA as a full-time employee this fall." - Dan Vanderkam, undergraduate student

"Graduate school, studying computer science at the University of Wisconsin Madison." - Steve Jackson, undergraduate student

"I'll be working as an intern at Microsoft for the summer developing new features in the next-generation Visual C++ compiler, and continue my PhD studies in programming language theory at Yale University starting this fall." - Eric Shao-yu Cheng, undergraduate student

"I've accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Texas A&M University starting this fall." - Scott Schaefer, graduate student

"I will be joining an academic research organization called RENCI (Renaissance Computing Institute) at Chapel Hill, North Carolinaas a researcher in high performance computing." - Anirban Mandal, graduate student

What are you looking forward to most about leaving college?

"I'm looking forward to living in new environments, enjoying life more, and applying things I learned in college." - Eric Shao-yu Cheng, undergraduate student

"I'm most looking forward to being off on my own, with my own home/car/life/income, and meeting tons of new people." - Dan Vanderkam, undergraduate student

What will you miss most about Rice?

"I'll miss all the nice people and good friends at Rice, my professors, the opportunity to take a lot of random classes and to use the darkroom in the visual arts department, the awesome architecture of Duncan Hall, affordable housing in Houston, Whole Foods Market and Central Market, and all the great restaurants." - Eric Shao-yu Cheng, undergraduate student

"Relationships formed through doing research with professors and through taking project-oriented classes like Comp 460." - Steve Jackson, undergraduate student

"I'll miss all of the great friends I've had at Rice and the fantastic resources that a University has to offer." - Dan Vanderkam, undergraduate student
